Firefly on a Hill

Matthew 5:14 “You are the light of the world. A city set upon a hill cannot be hidden.”

A city on a hill.

I’ve heard it so many times I thought I’d become immovable to it’s deeper meaning. But the last time I heard it said, it struck an entirely different chord. One that resonated deep inside my heart.

Life has an incredible way of making me feel inadequate in everything I do. My talents, my ideas, even my cherished dreams. I’ve never really thought I was good at anything. Except just being average at everything. I mean, what’s so important about a little girl from Missouri who always wears a sweater specifically designed to carry her heart on the sleeves?

A city on a hill.

That’s what’s so important about a little girl from Missouri.

A city on a hill can’t exist without little girls who wear their hearts on their sleeves and think too much. They can’t exist without the talented and the not-as-talented. The talkative and the quiet, the brave and the shy. I’ve been called to be a part of a community that sends out a beacon of hope to a hurting, cowering, lost and lonely world. And if everyone thought they weren’t good enough, there wouldn’t be a city on a hill.

I might only be one small firefly in a big, wide open world, but I’m going to glow as bright as I can for as long as God allows.

And one day, I hope I’ll be able to look back and know I was a vital part of that city… a firefly on a hill.
